Lucas, Shane and Chris are students in my programming class. They are always looking for new opportunities to program, and are frequently working on independent study projects that are far beyond what their classmates are studying.
We worked with Android App Inventor and JAVA to create Android apps, but the students found the emulator to be really limiting. The emulator couldn't do location aware apps or apps that used the accelerometer. They used their own devices and one of my devices, but they really wanted a class set that they could access and test their apps on.
There is a definite real-life problem-problem solving element to this project. Creating and testing apps on various devices with various versions of an OS is what an app developer does for a living. Academically, we use quite a bit of math in programming. Variables, sequencing, and patterns emerge frequently in programming.
In Their Own Words
The class needs 5 tablets for our new programs that we need to test. We make the new programs using things such as MIT App Inventor, Scratch, Python, JavaScript and Visual Studio. The tablets will help us test out the programs and upload them to the Android store. They will let us make programs for education, games, and to teach people how to program.
We will encourage people to donate to help the school get more technology. It gives more people the opportunity to choose what they would like to do. Also it gives them the opportunity to check their grades.
The project will help our school increase the use of technology. Kids in our school like using technology over pen and pencil. It is a lot more easy for some people and allows more students to get used to the technology because technology is being use more and more every day.
