My Students

My students are first graders at a Title l school in a rural area. We live in a small community, but the students in my class represent a wide variety of social and economic backgrounds.

Although many of my students face challenges and hardships in their lives, they come to school eager to learn with a seemingly unlimited supply of energy and curiosity.

I am always looking for ways to use these strengths to engage their minds and bodies in a meaningful way.

My Project

My students will utilize these materials to complete projects related to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). They will use the K'nex building set, TumbleTree Timbers, and animal counters to explore engineering concepts through guided and free-play activities. They will build towers, homes, and bridges for their animals and use them to solve real-world word problems.

Children are natural engineers and love to explore possible solutions to challenges.

These materials will give them the opportunity to solve problems in a concrete way.

In addition to learning basic mathematics and science concepts, these first graders will be learning the social skills needed to work in teams and the personal skills needed to succeed within and outside of the classroom.
