Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My goal is to make my classroom fun and engaging. I want my students to love coming to school and to be active learners!
I have 24 kindergarten and transitional kindergarten students.
They come to school each day with big smiles on their faces and are ready to learn. I teach in a low-income school with a high number of English language learners. My school is innovative and offers a wide variety of after-school clubs to give opportunities to students that many probably wouldn't have otherwise.
My Project
Financial literacy is an important life skill that begins in kindergarten! My students are learning foundational skills such as counting by ones, fives, and tens, beginning addition and subtraction, comparing numbers, the value of coins, understanding greater/less than, and how to count money.
Kindergartners learn best through play and by using engaging, hands-on materials.
They love working together to solve problems, count, and represent numbers. I am requesting hands-on math centers that will help to reinforce number sense, which is an important part of financial literacy. Students will work on one-to-one correspondence and number sense with the Gumball Grab activity, dough counting mats, magnetic counting maze, giant tracing numbers, and a magnetic adding machine. Using these hands-on centers and manipulatives will make learning math and financial literacy skills fun and exciting for my students.
Financial literacy is an important skill to introduce to young students. Practicing number sense in a fun and hands-on way will build a solid foundation for these students.
