Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How do you teach financial literacy to children living in high poverty? You do it by making math challenging, exciting, and having hands-on experiences. I am trying to teach students math concepts as well as build a foundation for financial literacy.
Our school is an inner city school in a high poverty area.
Our school is small and on a very limited budget, but our community, though poor, has a heart of gold. Most students are on free breakfast and lunch. My students are five and six year old children who are eager and excited about learning.
My Project
I am requesting three math activity charts that will prove vital to teaching kindergarten mathematics. The first is a number line which will be used to count, add, and subtract. It will also aid in teaching students problem solving and facilitate students when counting money. The second chart is an ALL ABOUT TODAY activity center that allows interactive participation of my students. They will keep track of the days of the week, months of the year, seasons, weather, and problem of the day. Finally, I am requesting an interactive chart called, All about Numbers. It focuses on correct number formation, estimation, introduction to financial literacy by utilizing a piggy bank and coins, introduction to simple addition facts, and an introduction to telling time.
My students have very little opportunity to spend money of their own.
They are limited in their hands on experiences in dealing with money. By funding our project, you are helping me build a foundation in financial literacy as well as other every day math concepts. These charts will allow my students to learn concepts that will last them a lifetime. Please help my students learn about real life math concepts.
