My students are second graders in a very high poverty, elementary building. My students have a lot of responsibility in their daily home lives and when they come to school they get to be children and interact with their peers. My students are amazing because they are capable of so much, but they need help seeing that in themselves.
Our school is a Title I building with approximately 550 students and our whole building struggles to have enough materials for students to be successful on a daily basis.
Because of the lack of materials within our building, many teachers spend a lot of their own money to purchase necessary supplies.
Over the years, homework has been something that has been given a bad reputation. From the countless hours of work to the frustration of not knowing how to help your student, stress is felt from every member of the family. I still believe, however, that homework is an important part of learning and skill building. Homework does not have to be hours of worksheets, reading and writing essays, though.
Providing family engagement packs to my students and their families can help build togetherness and provide a sense of accomplishment for every student.
It has always been my belief that a connection between home and school helps build the learning environment and helps students connect the skills they are learning.
With your help, I believe that giving families easy to use and engaging tools to play various different reading and math games together will be a benefit to every member of the family.
