Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is truly a barrier free school, serving all students who come through our doors. Almost 10% of our students are English language learners and 33% are students with disabilities. Almost half of our students stay in after-school until after 5 PM each day while their parents work.
Many of our students come to school with toxic stress due to trauma and stressors at home.
They would benefit from tools and support for regulation in order to prevent their body’s stress response from interfering with learning.
My Project
Children who are stressed have difficulty learning and retaining new information. The sensory room will offer an opportunity to decrease stress in order to improve academic and behavioral outcomes.
The sensory room will also foster Emotional Intelligence (EQ) by teaching children healthy coping skills at an early age.
Many children with challenging and stressful home environments are often not taught healthy ways to self-regulate, leading them to resort to aggressive, oppositional behaviors and impulsivity.
We want to provide an equitable school environment in which each student is set up for classroom success and each student’s unique needs are met. Many children walk into school each day with factors outside of the classroom that influence their ability to succeed.
Part of providing an equitable school environment is removing punitive approaches to discipline and interrupting the school to prison pipeline. The sensory room will interrupt patterns of children being removed from the classroom by encouraging regulation, supportive and restorative approaches and preventing behaviors from escalating.
