Building Environmental Stewardship and Reducing Single Use Plastics

Help me give my students a reason to be environmental stewards. We are currently using single use food containers and would like to go back to lunch trays. These garbage cans will be put around the school.

My Students

We have an amazing group of students at our high school, they are eager to learn and discover. They have done so many great things and are a really wonderful group of pre-adults. We are a public school who serve grades 9th through 12th.

Our student population does really amazing things for our community through outreach, volunteering and community involvement.

Our project will not only impact our school, the current student population but will go on to impact future students at our school.

My Project

Through this project we will express the importance to our students about waste and the value of eliminating non reusable products within our community. The goal of our project is to create awareness among our students that transfers over into their daily lives, with them becoming more environmentally conscious.

As a school we will be able to reduce our building waste dramatically, we serve around 1000 lunches a day.

Our current hot lunch program is using single use takeout containers. With the reintroduction of washable trays we will eliminate the majority of non-food waste produced.

We have purchased reusable lunch trays but need receptacles for students to put their waste in and place their trays for cleaning. We will be putting the garbage bins around our school in different locations to consolidate distribution and avoid losing a high volume of trays.
