This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are creative, inventive students who love to build. The only building materials we have in our classroom are some old wooden math 3-D shapes, which are never enough for the 30+ students I have each day.
My students are gifted first-fourth graders.
They are imaginative and creative. We recently received a Mindware catalog in the mail, and when I allowed them to look through for something for our class, the item all four classes chose were the KEVA building planks. Students were intrigued by the way that the structures could be built with rounded sides and arches by only using the small rectangular planks. These planks are just what they need to encourage their engineering and problem solving skills.
My Project
These materials will not only help with encouraging creativity, they are excellent tools for math, engineering and architecture. The students can study how arches are forms, use the planks to build structures of different styles to determine which are the most sturdy, could bear the most weight, which are the most structurally sound. In addition, the trebuchet and catapult kits can be used to include physics lessons (angle of attack, laws of motion, how mass affects acceleration).
These KEVA plank sets (Structures, Contraptions, Trebuchet, and Catapult) as well as the additional set of planks, will give my students plenty of materials to explore their engineering and architectural skills.
Thank you for considering our project, and for your support of public education.
