Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Weigh in to help spark our creativity and bring to light the magnetic properties of 5th grade science!
My class comes from a low income area rife with trials that children should not have.
However, they attend a school that really tries to better the situation and education of every student. My class loves to explore, try new things, create, design, and build.
My Project
The supplies I have requested include 12 bar magnets, 2 spools of copper wire and 30 button cell batteries for circuit building, 16 motors, 40 nails, sticky tack, 30 toothbrushes, and 3 scales. The items were specifically chosen to do several magnetic/electrical projects, including one called battle bots. Battle bots are miniature robots that pairs of students will have the opportunity to design using wire, motors, magnets, toothbrush heads, sticky tack, nails, and button batteries. They will use the scale, exploration and scientific principals to create robots and come up with ways to engineer them to do specific tasks. This will enable my students and the rest of the fifth grade to explore science in a way that is fun and opens the doors of engineering. They will learn how scientific principles and innovation can effect the world around them.
Engineering is America's future.
It is where good jobs will be waiting when my fifth graders graduate. My students enter fifth grade having never heard of an engineer. If you can help me give my students the chance to see what engineers do in a fun and meaningful way, I feel that the doors to a career path previously unknown to them will be not only opened, but perhaps become their goal.
