This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come to me from a variety of backgrounds. They are creative, inquisitive, and intelligent in different ways. I began to see this even more last year when I was asked to combine my Library Media class with art. Last year was an amazing year! I saw students who struggled with Math or Reading, bloom when they were given the chance to draw, paint or create. This is truly proof that students learn and show learning in different ways.
My Project
The materials and books that I have chosen will help my students learn more about the world outside of their neighborhoods. By sharing books about other cultures, famous artists and their work, students will learn more about the world around them.
Reading and learning about others helps to build empathy and a broader sense of the world.
I want my students to be encouraged and inspired in my classroom. I want them to know that we all have things in common, even when we do not look alike or speak the same language. We can communicate thoughts and feelings through art.
Many students do not have a variety of books and materials at home. While we have a wonderful local library in town, sadly, many students who are not within walking distance do not have the transportation to get there. The books that they read and listen to in school are many times, the only ones that they are exposed to. I want to make sure I am sharing books that will have a lasting impact on them.
