I teach 6th Grade in a culturally diverse school with students from over 40 countries, with over 60 languages spoken in their homes.
I am working on building up a collection of books that are culturally appropriate and that help them understand the many complex social issues we are facing in our world today.
My students struggle with finding books with characters who look like them, as well as characters who have had similar experiences in their lives.
My Project
These books will help students develop stronger reading and discussion skills, as well as giving them the opportunity to learn about the culture of other students in our class and school. Students will also lead class discussions based on their reading.
Students will read in small groups and have the opportunity to check out books to read at home.
Becoming more civically aware is crucial to 6th Grade students, and living in a community as culturally diverse as the neighborhood where our school is located makes it especially important. Books such as those I am requesting will give them that much needed contact.
