Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are amazing, and they work so hard. At over 85% low-income, our school is doing incredible things. We're a 9/10 school with scores far above the state average and virtually no low-income student achievement gap.
This hard work has not always been in balance with what our students need and deserve in terms of play and social-emotional development.
Recess time is limited, academic time is extended. The school's resources are spent on academic materials and technology. Our kids need to play. Just a little.
My Project
Our students attend school 7:20am-4pm on an extended calendar. They have only a short PE class and a 30-minute free-play, in order to maximize their learning in the classroom. Our students would greatly benefit from getting better exercise in an equipped play yard and build better relationships engaging in sports together.
Currently, there is no playground and no free-play equipment of any type.
Students wander the blacktop and do their best to run laps, play tag, examine bugs, and otherwise occupy themselves but this time and space could be much better utilized.
Our students love competitive games- especially soccer and four square but lack the materials to play them. Younger students who are still developing their gross and sensory motor skills need to climb and see-saw to build their cooperation and teamwork, along with their balance.
