Building Connections and Character: Fostering Kindness and Compassion Through Play

My Project

As a fourth-grade teacher, I aim to help my students learn to see the world through the eyes of another person by engaging them in activities that foster empathy and perspective-taking with board games, books and coloring books. One effective way is through connecting with each other through play. Structured play encourages children to consider different viewpoints and develop empathy while learning and playing alongside each other.

Measuring success in my students’ understanding of compassion will involve a combination of reflective practices and observational assessments.

Students will maintain reflective journals where they write about their experiences and feelings related to how they are getting along with their classmates.which I will review to gauge their growth in empathy. Peer and self-assessments will also play a role, as students provide feedback on their classmates' acts of kindness and reflect on their own behavior. Additionally, I will observe their interactions and behaviors during class activities, noting any changes in their willingness to help others and their ability to empathize. Through these methods, I hope to nurture a compassionate mindset that will positively influence my students throughout their lives.
