Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third grade teacher in the Bronx. The school I work in is in the poorest congressional district in New York. Year after year I encounter students who are opposed to reading and usually it is because they don't have much interest in reading the material that is put in front of them. With these subscriptions I have seen even the most reluctant student turn into an engaged and enthusiastic reader!
The students that enter my classroom are eager to learn, ready to read, and itching to write, but don't always have the supplies to do so.
Our students are great kids who deserve all the opportunities they can have to gain the knowledge they need to succeed in school. It is my job as a teacher to do my best to provide them with all the experiences I can that will lead to a fulfilling education. The previous 3 years I have asked for subscriptions of both magazines for my students through Donors Choose. I was lucky enough to be funded each time and my students benefited greatly. Their reading levels soared! Therefore, I am requesting them again for my 2017-2018 school year.
My Project
Through the use of Scholastic News and Time Magazine for Kids each student will be able to read about current events, people, and places they have never heard about, and other non-fiction topics. My students will use these magazines as a means for discussion inside the classroom and build their ability to speak in front of audiences and debate on topics. They will also use them to better their writing by responding to the literature they are reading. Also, through the use of these magazines my students will be able to build their vocabulary. They will be doing all of this while building their reading fluency. All of these are skills they need to master to get them college and career ready. Since the students will receive a new magazine each week there should always be a topic that will peak their interest. My students will want to discuss the article with others. This will be evident when any person walks into the classroom.
Competition is high in today's world.
Some people would say that my students have a disadvantage because of the community they live in, or because of their economic status. I want to do everything I can to give them an equal opportunity to achieve their dreams. By donating money for these magazines you will be helping my students continue on their way to becoming successful readers, writers, and speakers.
