Our school serves approximately 400 students in 4K-5th Grade. According to (WISEdash), 55.7% of our student population is economically disadvantaged.
The goal of this project is to help build confidence in ALL students by allowing them to focus on personal growth rather than comparing themselves to their peers.
I work with students who are struggling in reading and they are often embarrassed to choose books that look different from those their peers are reading. This is especially true in grades 3rd-5th, where some students are in chapter books, while others are not quite there yet. It is critical to their reading development, that they spend time applying what they are learning to text that is just right for them. Right now, I am working with the PTO, Principal, and a local printing store to make personalized book jackets for ALL students. So, whatever level they are reading at, whatever the length, size, cover of their book, they all can "look" the same. No stigma, no comparing, just enjoyment and reading practice. This project will help offset the cost of the book jackets, and then a school fundraiser will help with the printing costs. Thanks for considering.
My Project
At the core of this project is the goal of building lifelong, joyful, and confident readers. As much as we do as educators to embed equitable practices in our classrooms, students will still look to compare where they are in relation to their peers. We have purchased Hi-Low books to help students see themselves as chapter book readers. We've gathered a variety of loose book jackets from our personal libraries for kids to cover their books with if desired. This project, though, is for ALL students, regardless of need or ability.
