Imagine...you are sitting in a classroom with your hand up in the air, eager to answer a question on the board. Once called on you make your way to the front of the room, stumbling past desks or tripping over peers. Finally at the front of the room, you realize you have forgotten the answer.
Our classroom has 21 bright, eager and enthusiastic learners who attend school in our second grade classroom every day.
Each morning, I am greeted with good mornings, hellos, high fives and hugs, regardless of the type of morning they have had. Finally in the classroom, those same seven- and eight-year old students greet each other with hellos and good mornings, providing each other with a bright start to the day.
Amongst my 21 students, there are readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, historians, artists, athletes and musicians. Each student possesses different qualities that make up our wonderful second grade classroom. Those same 21 students expect to receive a quality education in the safe, caring, nurturing environment that they helped to create and maintain.
These boys and girls are here to learn. I am there to facilitate that process and make it a positive, meaningful experience for them.
My Project
I am looking to receive a Promethean ACTIVslate 60. This is a tablet the size of a notebook and is wirelessly paired with the Promethean ActiveBoard, which is an interactive whiteboard. The tablet is small enough and light enough to be passed around. It uses the same ActivPen as our Promethean Board.
This ACTIVslate allows students to answer questions from their seat so that they don't have to get up, stumble over students and forget their answer. It promotes discussion, debate and conversation, all while building confidence. Whoever is holding the slate is in control of the board from wherever they may be in the classroom (i.e., small group, whole class at the desk, from the carpet, etc.). This can be a powerful tool for someone who may be less likely to participate. The ACTIVslate allows for the learning to flow from one objective to the next without losing momentum.
This project is essential to my classroom as it supports positive thinking and continuous learning.
The students in my second grade class are bright, smart and enthusiastic learners and I want them to have every opportunity possible to participate and learn something new. If I can provide students with a different way to discuss, debate and converse with each other, then I know that participation will increase, confidence levels will skyrocket and success will illuminate from our classroom.
