Mrs. Abebe from Washington DC is requesting computers & tablets through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 10 computers to build their computer literacy, work on research projects, and so I can incorporate more technology into my daily lessons.

El Salvador, Nigeria, Mexico, Cameroon, Georgia, New York . . . my students are from everywhere. My school is in a transient city, a gateway for immigration, and it creates a global studies campus with wonderful diversity. I teach World History to 10th-12th graders and a Research Skills course. My students are humble and unfortunately sometimes they do not realize how great they are. Implicit biases and horrible past experiences have sadly created a void of confidence in some of my kids and a void of hope in others. Resilient, they are open-minded and rise to the occasion to succeed.
It is evident that most of my students have been failed by the education system somewhere between kindergarten and now, and it is my job to try to make it right for them.
They have two years to prepare for college and life beyond high school. Two years to learn typing skills, critical thinking, research skills, and other 21st century skills necessary to be successful today. I am not doing them service by solely teaching pen and paper. I want to push my teaching to incorporate more technology, and my students are eager to build these essential skills.
Students today do not have typing or computer classes, and their computer literacy skills and typing skills are suffering. I have innovative ideas to build computer literacy and typing skills through my instruction, but I need computers for each of my students in order to do so.
We only have three computers currently in my classroom.
With these ten additional computers students will be able to learn how to write emails, maintain a Google drive, create presentations, organize spreadsheets, and more. Teaching high school should not just be about the curriculum but should also teach students the life skills necessary to be successful and productive people in society. My hopes in transforming my instruction to include these skills is dependent on having computers for each of my students to use.
