Our school is an international middle school with over 100 different nationalities. We are an urban school in the pacific northwest. Our school is full of energy, laughter, academics, and promise. We set our standards high and work very hard to achieve all of our goals. The majority of our students come from low income families and many have experienced trauma in their lives. School is a safe place for them to feel supported and cared for. As a special education teacher, I teach students that have many different abilities.
We are a community of learners where everyone belongs.
We pride ourselves to teach tolerance, understanding, and love. We celebrate our differences and build strengths as a community. Middle school is a time of great change both mentally and physically. Lots of energy, patience, and fun go into every school day.
My Project
Reading comprehension is a challenging skill to build for all students. Students who struggle with decoding words spend much of their thinking on decoding and miss putting the pieces together to build reading comprehension.
My special education students will use these LEGO blocks to literally “build comprehension.” Building characters, settings, and sequences will enable them to improve their reading comprehension.
They will be able to identify key details in fun, collaborative, and engaging lessons. The use of tactile items to build comprehension is a researched-based strategy used in every classroom. My students will be building their comprehension brick by brick!
