Help me give my students soil mix, peat pellets, seeds and fish tank materials for the chance to see plants growing right in their own classroom in different ways!
Our K-5 Title 1 school sits in the heart of Albany, Oregon. Over 80% of our students benefit from the free or reduced-price lunch program and many participate in community after school programs so that their parents can work. We have a high population of English Language Learners, so I want to do my best to ensure they ALL have everything they need in order to be successful while learning with me.
My 3rd graders will LOVE observing plants of all kinds growing right inside our classroom.
They'll be learning about nature without even realizing it!
My Project
Living in Oregon, these students are used to a lush, green environment. Their classroom should embody the same beauty they see around them with the addition of plants and a hydroponic fish tank in our classroom.
Not only will they be able to see different types of roots in action (a 3rd grade state standard) but they will have the enjoyment of a class pet in the process!
The addition of study carrels will help us to understand when our work needs to be private (e.g. assessments), versus when it needs to be shared (e.g. group work about Science).
Once our class pet materials (tank, food, gravel, thermometer, and plants) arrive, we'll name our new fish friend as a class, and build on our ability to work as a community by feeding and caring for the pet. They'll see the plant roots dangling in the fish tank as well as the Marimo Moss balls providing the fish what they need in an air and water cycle. It's exciting to think about how much they'll learn in this simple system.
As we plant many types of herbs and watch them grow, they'll have the potential to take them home if they are cared for properly. Using the pellets, greenhouse, seeds, and soil, students will learn about the parts of plants, what plants need for survival, and how to care for them through a series of lessons. Once their plants are ready to take home, their families can enjoy the wonderful herbs in home cooked meals, strengthening the home/school relationship further.
My students will be rewarded for their hard work in so many ways!
