Ms. Ritchie from Saint Louis MO is requesting instructional technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a digital camera or "storytelling technology" to tell their AMAZING stories!

SPECIAL doesn't begin to descibe MY students. They are filled with strength, perseverance and ambition! 100% of my students are newcomers to the USA and are starting their journey in a big urban Saint Louis public school. I teach ESOL, reading and writing to a diverse group of teens. Some are attending school for the VERY first time, others were denied years of formal education living in refugee camps, fleeing war or escaping poverty. They all need a fresh start!
We are diligently working in Newcomer ESOL writing classes to record our personal stories so they will never be lost! My students come from ALL OVER this beautiful world and have RICH backgrounds and amazing life experiences to share....they just need digital equipment to make them come alive! We began the school year learning simple vocabulary, the building blocks of a new language. Mid-year, we were able to write simple sentences. Now, for the remainder of the school year, my ESOL students will work to create "The Journey Project" a personal narrative that focuses on the art of excellent paragraph writing and oral storytelling.
Your generous donation of a single digital camera and video camera equipment will motivate my students to integrate technology into their English writing and create masterful digital storytelling pieces.
The Journey Project begins with birth and ends with personal goals and dreams. As students record their personal journey, they share the details of leaving their homelands, seeking refuge in a new place and beginning a new life in America...right here in Saint Louis! My dream is to teach students how add digital photography and video clips to their narratives to bring LIFE to their stories and record them into a digital library for preservation and future viewing. My Newcomer Program is under-resourced and the achievement gap for my high school students is vast. High school-aged refugees and immigrants arrive in America with varying educational backgrounds and schooling experiences and are lacking exposure to educational technologies. They are instantly immersed into a media-rich culture and lack experience using these technologies. Will you partner with me as I teach my Newcomer students the skill of thoughtful writing and the value of recording their stories using these powerful learning tools ?
