Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first grade teacher in the Inwood section of Manhatten in a small K-8 school. My first graders are English Language Learners where 90% qualify for free lunch.
There is no excitement unlike a first grade classroom where all of the students are engaged in learning activities which develop their own interests as well as help students build community.
Building with blocks is a structured learning activity for first graders. First of all, the students in the block area need to come up with a plan. What will we build today? Plans range from a small building, skyscrapers, communities, bridges, castles and I have even seen a coliseum complete with bleachers. As the students build, their talk varies from sharing, architectural planning, debating, compromising, pride and excitement. Then the students present their block architectural piece to the class. They explain their creation, talk about what they learned about working together and then they take a few questions from the rest of the first grade crowd.
My first graders need blocks! We would love to get the Hardwood Unit Blocks - Builder Set from Lakeshore Learning Materials.
Through the block work, first graders develop connections because they are communicating with each other on a deeper level. Their negotiations when they create together are at a higher level than "Can you pass the red crayon?"
Thank you for considering our proposal, this project has the potential to create a community where the language is rich, plentiful and full of purpose.
