My 5th grade class is full of unique personalities. Creative, funny, dramatic, and curious are words to describe my students. I am building life-long learners, lovers of math, creative thinkers, and future scientists. We are a room of authors, mathematicians, scientists, poets, teachers and learners! We are also a community who was affected by Hurricane Harvey in 2017-18. Our school is a home away from home for our students who are still dealing with the after affects of this storm and the flooding it brought.
The families we serve really want what is best for their kids and trust me as their teacher to do all I can to support their students.
Flexible seating is a great way for 5th graders to have choice in how they learn best. I am preparing them for middle school in which they will have to advocate for their own education. Being able to recognize the places in which they can be the most creative is a life skill we are constantly practicing. Having many different options of spaces for them to collaborate in is essential to them growing and becoming lifelong learners!
My Project
Establishing a whole group area within our classroom will enable us to have a comfortable area where we can meet for many different reasons. While our new area would be used for Math and Science whole group instruction, we would also utilize it for our class meeting and community time.
Our whole group area would serve as our classroom's "family room" for us to meet to talk about the trials and tribulations of life.
It would be a place for us to celebrate each other and encourage each other through the sharing of ideas and life experience. The rug, bench and little couch would definitely give the whole group area a comfortable and "homey" feel in our home away from home at school!
