As a teacher in a low-income, high-poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with innovative and meaningful learning experiences. My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous.
Many of them are being raised in single-parent households, receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status and are English Language Learners.
These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical."
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can control their experience during the school day by doing this in a creative and positive way.
My Project
This Lakeshore rectangular carpet will become a comfortable area for our morning meeting, writers workshop and also math workshop. It gives our room a separate area for Mrs. Hay to model lessons, build community, and bring her students together to learn about each other.
The classroom meeting every morning is to start our day and the carpet will be for everyone to have a place to sit to listen to their peers.
Math workshop and Writers workshop are important parts of our day and we come together to model lessons and model skills the students need. This carpet will provide that area for students to come, watch, listen, & learn those important skills.
