Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the school librarian at a small, Title I elementary school in Albuquerque's south valley. My students are book-loving, avid readers and enthusiastic learners. They are inquisitive, compassionate, and creative. Our school is a dual language school nestled in a small, struggling community. Our population is 100% on a free breakfast and lunch program, and many of our students are first or second generation Mexican immigrants whose parents work several jobs to support them.
Many of my students do not have access to public libraries or books at home, and they rely on our school library for high-quality reading materials.
As English language learners, books are so important to my students and are truly valued. Our school library is an essential resource for my students and their families.
My Project
Have you ever wanted to read a new book, but found that you don't have access to it? Unfortunately this is often the case for the students at our school. Due to district-wide budget cuts, our school is only able to staff the library three days a week - meaning our students only have access to library materials on a limited schedule. They are also unable to access the library on weekends and during school breaks.
Building a Little Lending Library - that will be open and accessible to the school community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - will give students access to free, quality books anytime they want.
The Little Lending Library is a book-sharing movement, which means that the librarian doesn't supply all of the books for the library. Instead, the entire school community - students, parents, teachers and staff - is encouraged to contribute to the library and keep it supplied through book exchange. Students and community members should take a book to read, and leave one in its place that they think someone else should enjoy. Installing a Little Lending Library at Armijo Elementary would not only ensure students and their families have full-time access to the books they want to read, it will also help build community.
Your donation will go towards the purchase of a Little Lending Library kit, which will be built, decorated and installed by the school community. Students will get to paint the library themselves using the paints and tools included in the project supplies.
