I work in a K-5 elementary school building in Cedar Rapids, IA. Our students bring a tremendous diversity that we welcome and embrace. We have a high percentage of students who are enrolled the free and reduced-price lunch program.
We want kids to be curious and passionate about their learning.
At our building, we know that kids are more than a test score on a piece of paper. We value individual differences and celebrate each student's special uniqueness! A one size fits all approach to education won't work for our students.
My Project
Our students are working in a multi-age setting. We want to build community through a shared text read by every student.
Rich discussions will propel our new students to become a community.
Having a book for each student will help them feel vested in the process.
This book, How to Steal a Dog, will spark many conversations: the difference between right and wrong, how living in poverty affects kids, identifying problems and solutions and making connections to the text.
Research shows that good discussions can have an effect size of over a years growth. Additionally, the community building opportunities are rich with a novel as touching as this one.
