Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have been working with young people in Colorado for 19 years in many capacities. I am a special education teacher and the co-founder of the Music Appreciation project, a non-profit organization that funds musical equipment purchases and lessons for young people who could otherwise not afford it. I understand how important it is for our youth to find healthy, positive ways to spend their time and relieve stress. I’ve dedicated my life to helping young people make healthy choices.
This year, I have taken over as our middle school boy's soccer coach in order to help bring the benefits of team sports and physical activity to a very special group of young people.
The students at our school face a number of challenges, primarily economical. The percentage of free and reduced lunches at this point is 98%. Providing opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities, like soccer, give our students a chance to make healthy, positive choices after school.
My Project
Soccer is an integral part of our community; our students, their families and our school contribute to a very strong soccer culture in the Denver metro area.
Going into this year, our team had absolutely nothing in the way of equipment, not even a single practice ball.
Then, thanks to a very generous group of supporters, our team was gifted with a dozen practice balls through Donors Choose. The degree to which this donation helped our team is immeasurable. We could not have held practice without them.
Our regular season has come to an end, and we clinched our division with a record of 6-1. We are now poised to enter the championships as a top seed. Clearly our boys are a dedicated group of young men with a passion for the sport, especially considering our practice conditions.
Our team has no field to practice on; we are relegated to a public park across the street. We have no goals to defend or shoot on; we have to use backpacks to define the goal area. The only practice equipment we have are the soccer balls donated to us early in the season. Despite these deficits, our boys show up to practice three days a week, work hard and make the best with what they have.
We are in desperate need of appropriate practice equipment. We have the talent, the dedication and the ability to succeed; however, our boys deserve at least the most basic of practice equipment in order to perform to the best of their ability. Help us finish the season strong and gear up for next year!
