Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Why is his skin darker than mine?” “Why is my nose so big?” “He hit me!” These are comments my 2nd graders have made countless times. As a new teacher in the east-side of San Jose, I love how loving my students have been so far. In trying to talk about difference and sameness in my classroom I have often turned to literature and my own stories to help frame their reality. I have found books extremely helpful in teaching kindness, manners and open-mindedness. In this proposal I am requesting literature to build our library or our “Kindness Kollection of Kindness books”. The books in the first kit are a sensational collection of anti-bias stories. The books teach lessons and hopefully will spark feelings of understanding and compassion toward others. At the same time the books encourage kids to accept themselves. The books explore topics like adoption, differing abilities, friendship, illness and more. I also went through Barnes and Noble booksellers and picked out over a dozen more children's books to add to the collection. The variety of books all include lively, bold illustrations showing manners and kindness at all times! All the books get the point across in a fun and positive way. I would use these books a lot during the beginning of the year and then periodically as issues come up in the class. During the first few weeks when classroom culture is created, it is so important to create a welcoming environment for the students. Additionally because I have a take-home library system, after we read these books as a class, the students will be able to take them home and share them with their parents. They will return them the next day. I am very excited about the possibility of sharing these materials with my students. Thank you for consideration of our proposal.
