Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students who enter my first grade classroom come from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences but unite as a team in our classroom community. The one thing they have in common is they are insightful, inquisitive creative youngsters who are ready to get their gator gears engaged for learning. We have fun, yet focused days filled with creativity, inquiry, exploration, and hands on learning. Our Coding Buddies Project pairs up a 1st grade student with a 4th grade student to learn coding together.
Our goal is to expose our students to as many learning opportunities that will prepare them for the future as possible.
We strive to provide our students with hands-on activities that allow them to learn in their own way. My students, like many other first graders, learn best through hands-on activities, projects that get them up and moving while stimulating their creative thinking. We owe it to them to give them every resource possible to reach their full learning potential.
My Project
The Botley Coding Robot is a new and innovative robot that students can use to aid them in learning new coding skills, all without the need of a computer or iPad screen. These resources are vital, because having a non-screen coding option will allow more students to work on coding during our project time. It is the perfect addition to our 1st and 4th grade Coding Buddies Program. They are simple to use straight out of the box. With Botley activity sets, our students can experience STEM concepts and robotics. His funny, inquisitive face and easy-to-use coding interface make him perfect for students learning to code using directionality terms and have FUN learning to code with their buddy. My students will be able to learn at their own pace, and advance learners will be challenged using the accessory kits to go with the standard coding kits.
Coding is a fundamental skill that students need to foster creative problem solving and computational thinking skills, to promote social and physical development.
Coding drives innovation and gives students the chance to be creative. They will strengthen their verbal and written communicating skills as they program the robots and work collaboratively with their 4th grade buddy. My students need as many experiences with coding as they can, and it is my hope that these interesting little robots will capture their attention in a fun way, and will offer opportunities to continue to expand their understanding of coding. Botley robots will be their stepping stone into a world they can only imagine, which is the best part, their imagination will shape the future!
