Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are an amazing group of eclectic children, coming from all walks of life. Many are from socio-economically challenged homes, many from migrant families. The city is small so that most students who are permanent residents have known each other forever. It is a 'large family' of sorts. They all support each other and strive every day to be successful. And they are!
Despite humble home lives, these students are here every day ready to tackle their learning with rigor and excitement!
My Project
Many times, especially in younger students, expressing emotions or feelings can be daunting and impossible. Students this age experience difficulty with emotions, more so those students who are experiencing trauma at home or other parts of their lives. Building empathy can help students not only learn to express their own emotions, but to be able to see others emotions around them.
Building empathy will teach them how to care for themselves and each other as well as validate what they are feeling.
I am requesting multiple sets of various color rubber bracelets. With these bracelets, student can clearly and quietly tell me and others how they are feeling that day. They can be used as a tool to start often times difficult conversations about emotions and how to manage them.
