My students are six and seven-year-old second-graders in Pflugerville, Texas. Our school year recently began and I am excited to be entering my fifth year as a public school teacher!
This school year, I need essential supplies to meet the needs of my students because I am teaching in a new state, district, school, and grade level.
I started this school year with a completely empty classroom to fill and have done my best to provide a welcoming and enriching environment for my second graders. My goal as a teacher is to always make my students feel safe, comfortable, capable, and inspired when they enter our classroom. These supplies will help me meet my students' academic and social-emotional needs.
My Project
My second graders thrive on Morning Meetings. Each child arrives at school in the morning from different home situations, stressors, and routines to sit on our carpet as a classroom community. We greet one another, sing songs, share, play a quick game, and read the Morning Message out loud each day. The Morning Message is a critical component of the meeting that brings our classroom together, sets the tone for the day, and is a consistent routine the students look forward to. When the Morning Message is displayed on an easel, it becomes an interactive resource that promotes connectivity and invites students to add comments, complete sentences or solve math problems.
For second graders who are still learning how to read, having an easel that is at their level promotes engagement, interactive learning, and a deeper understanding of academic concepts.
An easel is necessary for shared writing, small group math instruction, phonics lessons, Morning Meetings, Closing Circles, and creating/displaying anchor charts. An elementary classroom is not complete without an easel because it is the heart of the classroom where quality learning takes place.
