Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in a neighborhood characterized by crumbling abandoned factories, old apartments, and unsafe houses. Crime is common and there is heavy police presence in the area. These students experience trauma on a regular basis and school is one of the few safe places in the area.
Our students are resilient, tenacious and brave, but they also frequently need more than the district, their families or their teachers can supply.
This project will give students the opportunity to build character by using animal themed materials. By sharing, teaching each other, coloring, crafting and playing with each other in a non-competitive atmosphere, they will learn to be compassionate with each other, as well as the pets they may have now, or in the future.
My Project
Nothing brings students together as much as their love of animals!! Unfortunately, many of our students are not fortunate enough to have toys at home, or time and space to enjoy making arts and crafts. Younger students who pretend to be pet owners or veterinarians by playing with the Playmobil and Pet Care and Grooming sets will be acting out the care for animals that will build character by teaching responsibility. Older students who attend extra-curricular activities and will use the gel pens, drawing books, beading and coloring books together. The weighted and aromatherapy animals, and theraputty will address sensory needs, often seen in students who have had traumatic experiences.
These materials will allow our students, who have very few opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities, to come together in a non-competitive environment while learning about animals.
They will also allow older students to play with younger students during the school day.
