My students attend school in a very diverse area. We are a semi-rural county but are just minutes from a city. Seventy percent of our students are receiving free or reduced-price lunch, but our community also is home to several golf course neighborhoods. We are a high priority school and our students struggle with standardized testing. The teachers are committed to trying many different strategies to help students learn. We believe that with hard work every student can be successful!
My Project
The purpose of this project is to increase adolescent literacy skills through a multimedia based character education curriculum with collaborative groups working in stations.
This project has four goals: to increase literacy, to increase
collaboration, to differentiate instruction, and to help students develop positive character traits. Although our current curriculum is rich in content, we are hindered by a lack of multimedia resources.
Three of the stations require Chrome books. One station will be a research station where the students will research well known people who have demonstrated the character trait of the month and then work collaboratively to create a summary to share with the class. Another station will be for students to listen to songs that portray the given character trait and collaboratively compose their own song to demonstrate their understanding of the trait. The third station will be used to watch Pixar shorts that reflect the character trait, and as a group, create a diary from the main character's point of view to enhance their ability to see multiple perspectives.
These Chrome books will help the students by providing them with diverse learning opportunities that will be both engaging and meaningful. In addition, at Leland Middle School, tolerance and respect for others is paramount. I believe that through this project, empathy for others will be increased, resulting in personal connections, not only at our school, but also in our community.
