I teach in the community I was born and raised in, which I love. I recently made a big change and switched from teaching elementary students (second graders) to this year teaching 7th graders. It has been a challenging transition but I love my students and strive to do all I can to impact their lives in a positive way. The community I live and work in is on the Flathead Indian Reservation, in northwest Montana. We are greatly impacted by poverty, drug and alcohol addiction, and trauma in many forms. My students have high needs in many areas, both academic and emotional. Montana has the highest suicide rate in our nation, and on our reservation it is 9 times higher than the state. Many of my students have been directly impacted by this. One of the classes I am teaching now, with my 7th graders, is a Creative Expression class. I love this class because it has been an opportunity for these kids to share who they are with me through writing and artwork. We have talked about the importance of finding your identity, your place, not just in our community but in the greater world around us.
My Project
With an intense focus on literacy in a high needs area, my school is able to provide very little funding toward creative or artistic endeavors. This year I have the opportunity to give students a chance to explore their artistic ability and enhance their confidence in themselves along the way. Since we started the year with no supplies for this class, these items would make a huge difference in how much the students are able to do.
Many of my students have amazing artistic ability but are not given many opportunities to showcase this at school.
These supplies and the projects we will use them for would be a way for them to do this. In addition, many students find their "inner artist" through projects like these. Through this process school becomes more fun and enhances their attitude and outlook on other tasks they face in their school day.
