Help me give my students their own classroom library. These are books that they race for in the school library and often have to wait weeks until one copy is returned.
I work in a Title I school in Scranton, PA. Our district has 100% free lunch as well as a high ESL population. My students come from different family lives, yet when we work together we are all learning together. They come from a variety of cultures, and we use these cultures to learn from each other and enrich our everyday lessons.
My students have such a love for their favorite stories.
They can not wait to get their hands on the newest novels that all of their friends are talking about. I would love to create a classroom library filled with books that students can't wait to get to. Everyday, we incorporate different pieces of literature to enrich vocabulary, reinforce comprehension, and create class discussion. This is all guided by the teacher. I want a classroom library where the students are as excited to engage their teachers in classroom conversations about their favorite books as we are about ours.
My Project
I always emphasize the importance of reading to my 5th graders. I also always talk about finding books you love. I work so hard with them to help them connect to what they are reading. We incorporate our stories with writing all the time. The best stories my students write are stories that they connect with. My goal is to give my students a library filled with their favorite books. I love introducing my students to classic novels that we all read in school. However, I want my students to get excited with a classroom library that is filled with books popular among today's kids. This will instill a love of reading that will last their entire lives.
