Celebrate Black Teachers and Students
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Mrs. Haak from Indianapolis IN is requesting classroom basics through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students a toolbox that will provide brain-aligned opportunities for them to develop self-regulation and sensory processing skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our students are brilliant, resilient individuals who will change the world! They come to school each day from a variety of homes, backgrounds, and languages.
Each day they inspire us to choose kindness over violence, integrity over the path of least resistance, and resiliency over giving up.
These kids have already overcome so much in their lives and they continue to flourish despite challenges most adults never have to face. They meet the world with courage, determination, and strength every single day.
Aligning our practices and procedures with the latest research in applied educational neuroscience changes everything! Through adapting new strategies that target current brain status, we can more effectively reach and teach our students.
Through use of this brain-aligned toolbox in individual and group counseling as well as classroom lessons, students will develop skills necessary to self-regulate, interpret their sensory experiences, and connect to other students and staff.
How will I know if the project was successful?
After implementing new brain-aligned practices, I will compare school-wide discipline and attendance data from previous years to note any statistically significant differences.
Through the use of brain-aligned practices, students will:
- Develop sensory interpretation skills through use of loofahs, beach towels, stress balls, essential oils, make-up brushes, therapy putty, and stress balls at an "Amygdala Reset Center."
- Receive validation through writing freely in their journal or on sticky notes about their experiences and feelings or by responding to a specific prompt.
- Learn about connection and empathy (which leads to neural reprogramming) through reading and participating in discussions about books such as "L.O.V.E." and "I Am Enough."
- Learn about their own brain functioning through read-aloud of "My Fantastic Elastic Brain" and "Bubble Gum Brain" as well as interacting with the 4D brain model.
- Experience the benefits of mindfulness through sensory activities such as listening to a singing bowl, chimes, or rain stick.
- Provide immediate feedback about their experiences via Plicker sheets which will be kept in reusable sheet protectors, data that will be used to inform counseling practices.
