A steady buzz can be heard as you approach. As you step closer, you realize the students are talking about math and they actually seem EXCITED! They are working in pairs exploring a new concept as the glow of comprehension spreads across the classroom.
The students in my classroom are 5th grade students from a Title I school.
They come from all walks of life and create a community of unique and supportive learners. This is important as our school does not have traditional classroom but open pods that are divided by class. While this means it can sometimes be loud, it also means a community is being built.
To achieve to their highest potential in this age of technology, my students need greater access to computers. We have one class set to share among all of the 5th grade students. This means that my students share 8 computers every day. The wealth of resources available using technology would greatly benefit my students' academic achievement and begin to prepare them for the responsibility of caring for a personal laptop that comes the following year in middle school.
My Project
By providing my students with a 1:1 ratio of student computers, we will be opening up a wealth of educational experiences. This ratio will allow my students to complete assignments using Google classroom, create presentations, conduct research, utilize online resources such as Khan Academy and Reflex Math, and receive quick, meaningful feedback on their academic progress. Additionally, providing each student with access to a personal comouter will allow me to teach my students the responsibility that comes with utilizing popular technologies in our current society while encouraging them to gain control over their own academic goals and achievements. I hope to prepare my students academically, socially, and personally for success.
