Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have been working with young people in Colorado for 19 years in many capacities. I am a special education teacher and the co-founder of the Music Appreciation project, a non-profit organization that funds musical equipment purchases and lessons for young people who could otherwise not afford it. I understand how important it is for our youth to find healthy, positive ways to spend their time and relieve stress. I’ve dedicated my life to helping young people make healthy choices.
This year, I am working with our school to help bring music into the lives of our students, a wonderful group of young people who may not otherwise have the opportunity explore this amazing world.
The students at our school face a number of challenges, primarily economical. The percentage of free and reduced lunches at this point is 98%. Providing opportunities to participate in creative and healthy activities, like music, give our students a chance to make healthy, positive choices after school.
My Project
Music provides a wonderful opportunity for young people to explore and engage in a positive, healthy activity that will last a lifetime. This year, we have a large number of students who are interested in learning how to play guitar and bass; however, we have a very limited amount of equipment. Most of the equipment we do have, is quite old and mostly in disrepair.
Students cannot learn to play music effectively if they don't have the equipment, or are forced to use broken instruments.
I personally have donated one guitar and an amplifier to the program and I am actively seeking local donations. The problem now, though, is that we have students enrolling in our music classes and we do not have enough equipment for them.
The equipment we are asking for here is very minimal and we have requested the most affordable guitars, basses and amplifiers. If we can just get started here, I believe we'll have the momentum to continue to build our program over the course of the year.
