Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are very special because they work hard to learn high school content while learning a new language. All of my students are ESL students. They are a diverse group that recently immigrated to the United States from Egypt, Mexico, Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Our school, located in Queens, New York serves a large population of students who live under the poverty level.

My students enjoy learning about history from the perspective of individuals who actually experienced the events.

My Project

In 1905, George Santayana in "The Life of Reason," wrote “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Unfortunately, today most Americans are not even aware that during World War II, Japanese-American citizens were forced to leave their homes and were sent to remote internment camps, losing their jobs, businesses and civil liberties.

This project is designed to give students a glimpse into the life of a young Japanese American girl who spent time in an internment camp during World War II.

Students will read about her experience through her own eyes. Then, students will compare her story with the well known story of Anne Frank during the Holocaust. Both girls were similar in age and faced hardship during the same war, although on opposite fronts and with vastly different outcomes.
