Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My second grade students and I live in a beautiful Southern California coastal city where an increasing number of families within our district are falling into the lower economic levels. Many families find it more and more challenging to spend quality time with their children after demanding work schedules. Despite the hardships and stress, the children arrive at school with a positive attitude and a thirst for new knowledge.
Their eager, smiling faces encourage me every day to give them experiences and opportunities that will last their lifetime.
We encourage each other to be the best we can be by learning cooperation, integrity, respect, responsibility, and independence.
My Project
Adding Legos Building sets to our classroom will provide an avenue for kids to experience the process of planning, creating, building, and problem-solving all in collaboration with their peers. Young students love working with their hands and these LEGO building sets will teach them how to read and follow textual and illustrated directions to create some simple machines. These sets also allow the students to create their own machines using their experience with the Legos and their imagination.
Learning that objects, such as Legos, can be used in numerous ways to create various outcomes will help build my students’ scientific and mathematical thinking skills.
