My students need Chromebooks to access every aspect of student-centered learning which will help to develop technological, reading, writing, and problem solving skills necessary for college and career readiness.
Being an ELA teacher today requires more than getting students to reach proficiency in reading and writing for them to be successful. Now, more than ever before, there is a higher demand to have a technological skill set-something I am currently not equipped to provide. Teaching in an urban middle school where almost half of our population is comprised of economically disadvantaged students, most have no means of technology outside of school and limited exposure within school.
Many of my students willingly come into school early or forego their lunch to get coveted computer time to access internet resources, get student tutorials when extra help is needed, or simply utilize the additional time to work on a piece of writing that has been typed and saved online.
Several, however, don’t even have those options and don’t have the access. The Department of Education has called for higher standards, especially in ELA, to make sure students are reaching the rigor that is required for college and career readiness. Yet with a limited amount of computers being shared by almost a thousand students, I am unintentionally failing to create meaningful learning experiences for my students.
My Project
Technology should be used on a daily basis. With Chromebooks, as part of our daily lesson, my students will be able to read short, current articles and write daily blogs for each other to read and write a response.
The Chromebooks can be used with the students’ Google Classroom accounts.
I can attach guided questions to the articles, upload short videos to enhance learning or build background, and attach other pieces of relevant text for further clarification.
With students communicating with one another in the same or even different classrooms, the use of Chromebooks will teach students to use technology in a manner that will benefit them socially and academically.
