My students are young adults with the world at their fingertips. Their life experiences vary from world travelers to wondering if their family will have food for the weekend. I have a diverse population that has been brought together to learn another language.
In my classroom, I focus first on building a community of respect, love and compassion.
From there, we dive into the content. As a world language teacher, I am able to use the students as my content and the language as a way to get to know my students better.
We use books to explore beyond our classroom walls, to develop a sense of other cultures and broaden our knowledge while building a solid foundation of the Spanish language. When my students see Spanish in context, paint a picture of the story in their head they progress along the road of acquisition towards the path to proficiency.
My Project
I would like to build a library of books that take into consideration the reading levels of individual students. It is important for the books to be comprehensible to students and about topics that are of interest and culturally relevant. I want my students to demonstrate reading skills; however, reading is not only an end but also a means to acquiring language. It is my hope that my students find a love for reading books that they choose at the same time expand their vocabulary and language skills.
If we give students books and time to read them, they will acquire language and grow.
The best way to differentiate so that all can grow is by free voluntary reading. My goal is to provide a safe and quiet place where students can concentrate and read, comprehensible and interesting reading materials in Spanish. My students will be “trained” on how to choose a book that is their independent level and how to read in another language.
