As the Class of 2029, my fifth graders are making the transition to middle school and growing into voracious readers! They always have an independent reading book in hand, ready to read whenever they finish an assignment early or have a spare minute!
My students love to read, they are curious and insightful, and they love learning in every subject.
They are curious and insightful. Their student-led conversations, both whole class and groups discussions, are rigorous and impressive! Step into any English or history class and you will hear students thoughtfully responding to each other, pulling textual evidence throughout the text to support their claims, and proposing questions to clarify or push the conversation. Their discourse is impressive and they love constantly learning!
My Project
After a 15 months of virtual learning and limited access to print books at home, my fifth graders returned to school eager to learn, but out of habit of reading for pleasure. Students are starting to re-establish strong reading habits as they check out books from our classroom library and are most eager to read when they discover a series they love and can't wait to continue reading. Making these popular books available to borrow will help students be excited to select books of their choice for daily independent reading, both in school and at home.
Help students rekindle their love of reading with high interest books that will keep students reading and eager for the next book in the series.
With sets of four favorite series - Goosebumps, The Baby-Sitters Club graphic novels, and the Aru Shaw and Tristan Strong series - students will have lots of engaging books to select from for their independent reading. In past years, students devoured these book series, sometimes even reading during lunch because they were so enthralled with the stories! I'm confident that with these great additions to the library, the Class of 2029 will also become hooked on books!
