I teach at a Title I/Star School where more than 50% of our qualify for Free and Reduced Meals and 20% are English Language Learners. Most of our students live in the downtown area of our town. Our students come from diverse backgrounds including different countries and culture as well as military families.
Despite the fact that they face many hardships outside of the classroom, our students come to school each and every day to feel safe, supported, loved, and ready learn.
Students at Lincoln are eager to learn and read and love getting new books to share in book clubs! Many of the students do not have books at home and so the majority of their reading will occur at school. Books allow these students to learn and also to travel to other lands through books and unique stories.
My Project
As a literacy specialist, I work with 8 teachers in 8 different classrooms. These magnetic letters will help enhance the phenomenal foundational skills instruction already occurring in our classrooms. Foundational skills are the building blocks that help students become fluent readers. These skills include knowledge of the alphabet, the concept of print, phonological awareness, phonics, high-frequency words, and fluency. During foundational skills lessons, students work with sounds and these magnetic letters will be another way that they can learn using hands-on methods.
With these new magnetic letters, teachers will be able to have students manipulate sounds and letters and apply the new concepts they are taught.
Building this strong foundation will help the students to become fluent readers who can comprehend what they read and develop a lifelong love of reading! Once they have mastered the foundational skills, they can begin reading and understanding more complex texts!
