I would like to receive phonics and word family linking blocks that students can use to build words and practice making word families. They will then be able to move forward to reading books that contain the word families they have practiced building. I want the students to be able to rotate through activities based on the needs of the child and then expand as they learn new words. I teach first grade at a brand new elementary school that is open for the first time this year. I don't want my students to suffer because the school has not yet been able acquire the extra learning materials that the students need to improve their reading skills. I like for my students to work in small groups and help each other succeed. If I could enable the students to physically build words with linking blocks, I will be able to encourage tactile learning. They would then be able to carry that a step farther to recognizing those words in print in a controlled vocabulary. My school has students from the very top of the socioeconomic ladder to students that fall at the very bottom. I have 15 students in my classroom and 1/3 of those students are enrolled in a Title One Remedial Reading program for 1 hour each day. I want all of my students to excel. These types of building blocks will allow the students to work on their individual learning level.
