My Students

First Graders are miracle makers. What I love about them, is that you can see real growth almost every single day! They come in to my room knowing about 70 sight words, and leave my room knowing how to read and sound out just about any word in the English Language! Their ability to grasp so much information while working hard, but yet still enjoy learning and giggling together is amazing! Their teeth are falling out (literally, I call them Shark people) but their brains are getting bigger.

They are learning what they like and don't like, what they can do and what they can't do - YET!

A huge part of my curriculum is teaching them independence and that they are capable of much more than they realize. My class this year has 6 special education students. Five in Emotional Support and 1 in Learning Support. Of those, there are 3 with Autism. They love play and things they can build and master, that is the highlight of their day.

My Project

These blocks will show how simple buildings are made, and develop into more complex buildings. Students will learn many fine and motor skills as well as engineering. Many of my students are not exposed to building games and blocks. They are limited in what they can play with and use at home do to either income.

We will relate math problems and stories to these buildings as well so that the students can relate to them in different ways.

The experience of having these in hand will give the kids opportunities to use imagination, engineering, and resiliency.
