Our school provides only one language: Spanish. We serve the most awesome students in grades 9-12 and provide rigorous academics and excellent teachers who do their best to teach the target language for real life application.
Our students are from a wide variety of economic situations, many receive free or reduced-price lunch, and some don't have access to computers or internet outside of school.
I would love to support their future successes by giving them opportunities to strengthen the skills they have, branch out into new areas and learn in challenging yet rewarding ways.
Familiar children's story books and bilingual board books give students the freedom to explore Spanish in an engaging way. While some books will expand on vocabulary in the context of Spanish fables and history, others will show my students the Spanish meanings of words in stories they have heard since infancy and thereby connect the familiar with the unfamiliar.
This project will enable my students to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently in Spanish with confidence.
During Sustained Silent Reading my students will be given opportunities to explore vocabulary, culture, and history in a pleasant setting.
