My students are energetic, inquisitive and enthusiastic. They enjoy learning through hands-on experiences. My students come from a variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and many are learning English as a second language. The majority of our students speak either Spanish or Punjabi at home.
My school has a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) focus and our curriculum is hands-on and project based.
We use building activities as a means for introducing engineering and science concepts to students. My classroom is an active one where hands-on learning is the norm.
My school is a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) focused school. Building activities are a great way for kindergarten students to learn about science and engineering concepts informally through play. Due to construction issues, I have been sharing a room with another kindergarten teacher and her class. Our new portables are ready now, so we will be separating into our own spaces but will have to split our existing shelving between us. This will make creating an organized and appealing space for blocks and other building toys very difficult. In addition, the other kindergarten teacher and I share one small set of building blocks. Children learn so much from building with blocks and we would like both classrooms to have this wonderful resource.
My students need storage shelves, and a shelf/block play package to make our classroom building center inviting, neat and accessible.
Building activities are great for sparking young children's interest in science and engineering as well as giving them the opportunity to learn about spatial relationships, 3D shapes, counting and other early math concepts. The addition of the block play/storage package to my classroom will allow my students to build many wonderful projects as they learn about math concepts. The additional shelves purchased through this project will make it possible to organize our other building materials in a neat and orderly manner.
