Our program serves children who are identified as at risk and children with identified disabilities or delays. My classroom currently is a mixture of children who are 3 and 4 years old. I have a very diverse group of students in my room - socioeconomically, ethnicity, English Language Learners and ability level.
For most of my students, this is the first time they are away from home for an extended time each day.
I pride myself in creating a safe and comfortable environment for my little ones to grow and bloom.
I believe very strongly that play is the way the children in my classroom learn best. I also strongly believe that early intervention is the key to success for the children in my classroom. We spend the vast majority of our day exploring and playing. Of my 15 students, 11 are expected to move on to kindergarten in the fall.
My Project
Our students are very familiar with the ways of electronics. They spend a lot of time using flat screens to do a lot of their learning at home. When we are at school, we don't typically use electronics to facilitate the learning that happens in our classrooms. I have found that my students, lately, need a lot of practice using their fingers and hands on smaller projects around the classroom. One thing that my students need practice with is cutting! What parent isn't excited to give their 3 year old free rein to use scissors in the house?! We do a lot of cutting in our classroom and having some new spring loaded scissors will get my little ones on the path to cutting.... a very basic skill that many of us are lacking.
And, who doesn't love Legos??
Legos are great for fine motor building but they can be used for many other activities. They can be used for sorting, patterns, counting, measuring and so much more! This Farm set I'm requesting will also fit perfectly into our Farm unit. So, I can see it being used all year long.
Finally, we have a board like the magnet pattern board that I am requesting as a part of this project. Unfortunately, the plastic has cracked and it is not able to be used. I would like to replace the one I have because this is a definite favorite in our room.
