This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a Title I school where 100% of my students receive free lunch and breakfast. Many of my students are performing below grade level in math, and due solely to the area in which they live, they do not have the same resources or opportunities as students in other parts of our city.
Despite the odds stacked against them by their environment, my students come to school ready and willing to learn and better themselves.
My kids love to have fun and want to bring their level up and become intelligent members of society, and I am doing everything I can to help them reach their goals.
My Project
After our first week of school, one of the best things I have learned about my students is that they LOVE to read! I teach math, but I have a small classroom library they can choose free time books from. I have an abundance of picture books for my students to choose from, but I could use more variety in my chapter books.
We are requesting new series books for our classroom library, including Dork Diaries, Dog Man, and Spy School.
I would love to be able to introduce my students to new stories as well as allowing them to read all of the books in the series they already love.
My students have already expressed an interest in the Dork Diaries and Dog Man series and have asked if I have any more of the books because they want to read them all.
I also have some students who are very into sports and science topics, but who are reluctant readers. I am hoping the Mike Lupica, Nick and Tesla, and Spy School novels will catch their interest and get them reading more often.
