As an elementary school student, navigating social rules and expectations, figuring out how to solve small problems, and communicating effectively can be tough! The pre-kindergarten through fourth grade students I service come to school each day excited to learn and spend time with their peers and teachers. On the other hand, they are still figuring out how to build positive relationships, solve problems, and effectively express and deal with their emotions, all key factors in being successful academically.
As the school psychologist of an elementary school, my hope is to give students the skills they need to build positive, long-lasting relationships; independently solve small problems; and to express and appropriately deal with their emotions.
This year, my students have shown me that they are eager to learn and apply these skills, they just need some guidance to get them moving in the right direction. In an age where face-to-face interactions are on the decline, kids need more explicit instruction on how to build healthy relationships and deal with emotions appropriately. I am hopeful that by giving students these skills early, we are helping to set them up for a lifetime of social achievement.
My Project
In our digital age, a child's need to learn and practice social skills is more important than ever. As a first-year school psychologist, I am still working on building my library of social-emotional resources to better service my students. The books, materials, and lesson guides I have chosen cover a wide range of age-appropriate social and emotional topics.
By donating to my project, you will help guide whole-class, small group, and individual lessons on building positive relationships, dealing with emotions and problem-solving.
These resources will also help solidify skills for students on the spectrum and student with other special needs.
